The graphite colouring of the lacquered
tip, the twist mechanism and the logo lettering emphasise the function
and character of the Drehgriffel Nr. 2. Made of aluminium and brass,
it ensures a perfect equilibrium and a particularly pleasant feel whenever
it touches the paper. The front tip (fine-tip) is milled from polished steel
and forms a harmonious transition to the 0.7 mm thin graphite refill.
The Drehgriffel Nr. 2 wins the coveted
Red Dot Design Award 2022
The Red Dot Design Award is one of the leading and most
prestigious design competitions in the world, and the Red
Dot Label is regarded as an international quality seal for
outstanding design. Bestowed by an expert jury, the famous
prize is awarded to products that feature outstanding design. The jury is made up of big-name designers and design
experts from around the world – they decide independently
which products receive a Red Dot Award.
The
winners in the Stationary category is the Drehgriffel Nr. 2.
The pencil with a twist mechanism is an unmistakable and
distinctive writing instrument that stands out from the crowd,
and not just because of its great quality and functionality. In
2020, Drehgriffel Nr. 1 – which is inspired by the 1920s and
features a hexagonal barrel with a colour-contrasting tapered
tip and twist button – was also awarded the Red Dot. Following the successful introduction of the Drehgriffel Nr. 1 series
of writing instruments, LEUCHTTURM1917 has expanded
the range this year with the Drehgriffel Nr. 2 and immediately
received another Red Dot Design Award.
Drehgriffel Nr. 2 – now also available as a pencil with twist mechanism.
Made of aluminium, the Drehgriffel Nr. 2 pencil is comfortable
to hold and is ideal for writing or other creative uses, such
as drawing or sketching. Its lacquered brass tip provides a
balanced weight for maximum comfort when writing.
In contrast to the Drehgriffel Nr. 1, the fine tip is made of
steel, creating a harmonious transition to the 0.7-mm
graphite lead. The graphite colour of the distinctive tip and
twist button highlights the function and character of Nr. 2.
Dreh – Griffel: a wordmark and play on words. The design
of the ‘Drehgriffel’ wordmark stems from ‘Sütterlin’, a style of
lettering developed in Germany during the 1920s to teach
handwriting. The deliberate disparity between the wordmark’s
old German style creates a playful contrast to the modern
design. The German compound word Drehgriffel, which is
made up of the two parts Dreh (to twist or turn in reference to
the innovative twist mechanism) and Griffel (a nod to th oldest
writing utensil in the world from the Greek grapheion), clearly
reflects the deep roots of the traditional German company
LEUCHTTURM1917. It is no certainly no coincidence that
the birth of the Drehgriffel and the foundation of Leuchtturm
Album Publishing House both date back to the 1920s.
The writing and drawing utensil’s mechanism is made in
Germany – by pressing the twist button, the gripper at the tip
opens and the lead is pushed out. When the twist button is
released, the gripper closes again and holds the lead in place.
Inside the Drehgriffel Nr. 2, a quiver holds several leads and
pushes the next one down when the current lead is used up.
